PHP / Laravel Developer

About the company

Shipmate is a shipping automation Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) platform for mid-size merchants and local delivery companies. We connect merchant order processing systems with domestic and international delivery services provided by all mainstream UK and Ireland carriers.

Shipmate is used to fulfil orders by printing shipping labels and sharing tracking details with merchants and their customers. Shipmate helps speed up and simplify order fulfilment, while reducing potential for human error and ensuring the most cost-effective delivery services are always used.

Shipmate is operated by our parent company, Codemakers, which also provides contract consultancy and development services. We are a team of strategic thinkers, inquisitive in nature with an optimistic and determined outlook who solve real-world business challenges with solid, highly functional digital solutions that delight users. Our products and services are trusted by famous brands and used by thousands of people every day.

About the role

We are seeking at least one PHP Developer to join our existing development team. The role suits developers with proven experience applying their skills in a commercial context, ideally within business web application software or SaaS platforms.

A solid understanding of the Laravel framework, best practice design patterns and code optimisation for high performance, scalability and security is essential. Applicants with experience in developing and integrating APIs, legacy systems integration, developing for the Vue.js framework, or incorporating AWS services such as S3 and SQS, will be considered favourably.

The successful candidate will carry out the following duties:

  • Develop new product features, in-line with product development plans and roadmaps, working alongside front- and back-end development colleagues
  • Maintain and improve existing product features in response to customer feedback, regulatory requirements or other similar requirements
  • Develop and maintain systems integrations, working in partnership with colleagues at carriers and channel platforms
  • Work alongside customer support colleagues to troubleshoot and resolve customer issues
  • Contribute to implementation strategy, acting as development lead on assigned projects
  • Further individual and team capabilities through introduction of new technologies, frameworks and best practices

The successful candidate will need to be an excellent communicator, both verbal and written, and have demonstrable experience in taking responsibility for delivering projects to specification and meeting deadlines.

The successful candidate will have a wide range of opportunities to continue to grow their skills, learn new frameworks and specialise in the fields that suit them best, while having the opportunity to influence team capability through improving working practices and introducing new technologies. Career progression opportunities include project management, squad and team leadership, and product ownership.

This role is open to candidates located in the United Kingdom and is a hybrid role, operating from our office in Derby city centre.

What’s the working environment like?

We operate from an office in Derby city centre, on a hybrid basis. The office provides a relaxed working environment with all the equipment you need to carry out your role. We have daily team stand-ups by video conference and a wealth of remote working applications and tools to support hybrid on-site and remote working.

Initially you will be required to attend the office regularly for on-site training and role familiarisation, with this requirement reducing over your probationary period to occasional office working, according to your preference and project needs. You will therefore need to be within a commutable distance to Derby city centre.

What does my employment package include?

  • A starting salary of £40,000 - £50,000, depending on experience
  • Flexible working hours
  • Hybrid office and home working
  • Bupa medical insurance
  • 23 days holiday plus bank holidays
  • Time to develop your skills and an annual training allowance

Sounds great! How do I apply?

The Application Process

Your application will first be considered by our senior management team, who will invite you to complete a short coding challenge ahead of a video interview if your application passes our initial criteria.

Upon successful completion of your video interview, we may invite you to a second technical interview with key colleagues you will be working with, to determine where best you will fit in our team.
